What is Talin®? (the natural sweetener used in UMS#1™)

Talin® is Thaumatin, an extract from the Katemfe Fruit (Thaumatococcus danielli) which is harvested from West African rainforests. It is a completely natural sweetener and taste modifier, improving the flavour of foods and disguising “off flavours”, and extending the time “pleasant” flavours linger in the mouth.

It is a protein, not a carbohydrate, therefore does not impact the blood sugar or have a laxative effective.

Talin® is 3650 times the sweetness of sugar, compared to aspartame (Equal) which is 200x, sucralose (Splenda) which is 600x, and Stevia which is 250x. Therefore only very tiny amounts are required to benefit the taste of the food/drink/supplement it is added to.

Why do I need to look after my gut/intestines (with products such as Heat Shock™ and XFG™) to improve my fitness and sports performance?

In a nutshell, poor digestive health means you won’t get the most out of your training.

As you know, damage is caused to the body when you train. Small micro-tears occur in muscles, nutrients are used up, and the heat shock from your higher body temps can damage your intestines.

The damage to the intestines means that digestion and nutrient uptake is compromised, you become susceptible to nausea and diarrhoea, plus you are likely to get more infections.

If you want your muscles to recover and grow, your energy levels to be restored, your immune system to stay strong and to prevent diarrhoea etc. you NEED to protect and nourish your guts. Otherwise you won’t absorb the protein or other nutrients from food and supplements to help heal your body, and prevent other complications that will interfere with your training schedule and performance.

Taking Heat Shock™ is clinically proven to protect from gut upsets and immune issues, while XFG™ will work hard to ensure your digestion and nutrient uptake is at its peak.

Can you tell me more about ribose?

Ribose increases your cellular energy pool, powering fast and slow twitch muscle fibres. It helps your heart, it speeds up the re-fueling process for faster energy recovery, and helps to build new muscle tissue!

Another amazing feature of Ribose is that it enhances the effectiveness of many of the other supplements you may be using. It helps your muscle cells to use the creatine you take; allows the fat transported into the cells by l-carnitine to be converted to energy; and assists the building of new muscle tissue using amino acids from protein.

5g per day is enough to achieve huge gains in the energy available to cells, plus it can be taken in small amounts throughout an event to keep your muscles topped up and performing at their peak.

I see that UMS #1™ contains Taurine. Does that mean it contains stimulants (e.g. caffeine) like Red Bull etc. do?

No. It is true that you see Taurine added to drinks like Red Bull, but taurine itself is not a stimulant, and contains no caffeine. Taurine is considered a conditionally essential amino acid, however it does not get taken up into proteins as other amino acids do.

Taurine is found in high concentrations in the brain and heart, and is believed to assist these organs’ functioning. It also plays an antioxidant role. Some trials have found taurine to improve athletic performance, and when combined with caffeine enhances focus.

Why do you have a 1:1:1 ratio of BCAAs within the UMS #1™ formula and not 2:1:1 or other?

In many BCAAs formulas leucine is often the most concentrated BCAA, this is because it is believed by some to be the key amino acid for stimulating muscle synthesis.

Leucine certainly has good research behind it and is proven to stimulate muscle synthesis, however when formulating UMS #1™ we did not find enough evidence to warrant any specific ratio. What we do know is that isoleucine and valine (the other BCAAs) also play a role in muscle recovery/synthesis, and studies support this, therefore we chose a high dose of all BCAAs.

In addition, we believe the presence of glutamine, plus the full amino acid profile provided by the highly soluble whey protein in UMS #1™, provides a better range of all essential amino acids for muscle recovery and protein synthesis. A great deal of evidence exists to support the consumption of complete proteins, moreso than any individual amino acid or specific ratio.

Will your beta-alanine cause “tingling”?

All beta-alanine supplements may cause tingling in doses upward of 3g, or at times when combined with niacin (the combined effects cause “flushing” and “tingling”). UMS #1™ therefore will not cause flushing or tingling as this high 3g dose is not achieved. The beta-alanine in the formula is working together (synergistically) with the other supplements and therefore the high, “tingling-causing” doses are not required.

Is there a maximum dose of l-arginine that can be taken before it begins causing head aches?

A review of L-arginine research shows that L-arginine doses of up to 10g have been used with no ill-effects. L-arginine supports the natural synthesis of nitric oxide, rather than unnaturally causing higher than desired levels. As a result we would not expect to see head aches occurring, especially in the doses found in UMS #1™ (even if 3 doses/day are taken).

Is there magnesium oxide in UMS #1™

There is NO magnesium oxide in UMS #1™. Therefore there is not the concern of GI upsets or diarrhoea (magnesium oxide is a well known “bowel cleanser”).

UMS #1™ contains 2 well-absorbed forms of magnesium – orotate and amino acid chelate that exhibit no undesirable side-effects on the gut.

The magnesium amino acid chelate in UltraMag® is albion TRAACS magnesium lysyl glycinate (diglycinate). This is considered the most scientifically advanced form of chelation in the world. They have a website: http://www.albionminerals.com/ These mineral chelates are proven to be highly bioavailable, while causing no GI upsets.

What are the benefits of L-arginine?

L-arginine increases the production and release of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide works to relax blood vessel walls so that they can open up and allow blood to flow more freely through them. When it comes to working out this means that more oxygen and energy is able to reach working muscles, heart, lungs, brain etc. In addition it means that waste products are able to be removed more efficiently from these areas also. These combined benefits means that performance can be enhanced and recovery can be faster.

Many also experience better focus and clearer thinking during their training due to the improved circulation to the brain.

But there’s more benefits! This opening of the blood vessels can mean reduced blood pressure, and yes, you guessed it, possibly better erections! Studies have shown that when men with erectile dysfunction took l-arginine, they achieved significant improvements. Just goes to show that l-arginine can help your “performance” in more ways than one!!

How does UMS #1™ compare to Gatorade, Powerade and other electrolyte drinks?

Gatorade and Powerade are great in that they provide the electrolytes and isotonic hydration needed by athletes. The problem is they are loaded with sugar (often more than 9 teaspoons per bottle!). This high sugar content completely works against your goals if you’re trying to get lean. It’s best to look for a product that provides electrolytes, hydration, and energy replenishment, without all that sugar.

Ribose, beta-alanine, l-arginine and magnesium are all awesome ways to optimise energy production in muscles cells, without causing a sugar spike. All of this, plus more, is found with electrolytes in UMS #1™. You can use this product before, during and after a workout. It not only replenishes electrolytes and energy, but also provides minerals, protein, amino acids etc. to boost energy, ramp up circulation and stop muscle soreness.

If you do need the extra glucose replenishment, add glucose powder to your drink (can be purchased for a very low cost).

I take a protein powder after I train, isn’t that enough?

Firstly, protein is absolutely essential when you’re training hard. The damage done to your muscles requires the amino acids found in protein to act as “building blocks” for repair so that overtime muscles can become stronger. The key amino acids required for muscles are the three branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) leucine, isoleucine and valine, plus glutamine.

But there are many other factors important for great working muscles, not just amino acids. Ribose works to power recovery of muscle tissue (in a way it’s helping the protein to do its job), plus ribose also enhances the production of energy so muscles have more power. Magnesium is used up when we are working hard, and needs to be replenished to prevent muscle soreness, cramps and spasms. L-arginine helps to open up the blood vessels so oxygen, energy and nutrients can flow freely to your muscles and magnesium orotate delivers energy right to your heart muscle so it can pump harder.

In a nutshell, protein is essential, and fantastic, but often not enough. Your body is complex, and requires a broad array of essential nutrients to function at its peak!

What ingredient within UMS #1™ causes it to fizz when mixing?

The potassium phosphate (mainly the phosphate part) is what gives UMS #1™ a small amount of fizz, and helps it to mix and dissolve efficiently.

As galactose in XFG™ is derived from milk, does the product contain lactose or casein?

The product contains lactose, but not casein.

The content of lactose is <7% of the galactose component. There is 4.9g of galactose per dose, and therefore there would be less than 0.343g of lactose per dose. This amount is rather negligible, and should be fine even for individuals with lactose intolerance.
