  1. 1Ocean's Eleven (2001)Ocean's Eleven (2001) 7.7/10 on IMDbReleased 7 Dec 2001Compared with the 1960 Rat Pack film, this casino robbery gives the supporting crew more comic jobs to do. Soderbergh makes recruiting, rehearsing and improvising part of the pleasure, with Clooney and Pitt setting an amused, unhurried rhythm. The original has the attraction of its stars sharing a…0
  2. 2The Departed (2006)The Departed (2006) 8.5/10 on IMDbReleased 4 Oct 2006Infernal Affairs (2002) is the leaner duel between two infiltrators. Scorsese's Boston remake earns my preference through the mess around that clean idea: supervisors, colleagues and lovers make maintaining an identity feel exhausting. DiCaprio's visible strain against Damon's polished ease gives…0
  3. 3True Grit (2010)True Grit (2010) 7.6/10 on IMDbReleased 22 Dec 2010Hailee Steinfeld's Mattie supplies the deciding advantage over the 1969 film: her fierce negotiations remain the story's centre even beside Jeff Bridges's magnificently disreputable marshal. The Coens return to Charles Portis's novel rather than simply restaging the earlier adaptation. Both…0
  4. 43:10 to Yuma (2007)3:10 to Yuma (2007) 7.6/10 on IMDbReleased 6 Sept 2007The 1957 film draws superb suspense from waiting in a room. James Mangold's 2007 remake chooses a rougher journey, making Christian Bale's damaged rancher negotiate his son's opinion as well as Russell Crowe's outlaw. That added family pressure is why the expanded action matters. Ben Foster…0
  5. 5Hairspray (2007)Hairspray (2007) 6.7/10 on IMDbReleased 19 Jul 2007Nikki Blonsky's Tracy seems to pull the whole neighbourhood into motion. The songs make her appetite for dancing and belonging an energy the film can share, which gives this version the edge for a buoyant evening. Its route is John Waters's 1988 film through the Broadway musical, rather than a…0
  6. 6Pete's Dragon (2016)Pete's Dragon (2016) 6.7/10 on IMDbReleased 10 Aug 2016The 1977 musical's Elliott is a mischievous cartoon companion; David Lowery's 2016 version makes him feel like a living animal whom a lonely child has learnt to trust. Fur, breath and the weight of a body against trees give the friendship a tactile tenderness. The new woodland story sheds most of…0
  7. 7The Crazies (2010)The Crazies (2010) 6.5/10 on IMDbReleased 26 Feb 2010Romero's 1973 film divides its attention between a poisoned town and the authorities attempting control. The 2010 remake keeps you closer to a sheriff, his wife and their dwindling circle, making containment feel like an immediate problem of whom to trust. Timothy Olyphant's dry practicality gives…0
  8. 8The Hills Have Eyes (2006)The Hills Have Eyes (2006) 6.4/10 on IMDbReleased 10 Mar 2006Wes Craven's 1977 film has rawness the remake cannot manufacture. Alexandre Aja's 2006 version offers a different, grimly persuasive advantage: the abandoned nuclear-test settlement gives the family nightmare a concrete landscape of domestic life made poisonous. Aaron Stanford's initially…0
  9. 9Fright Night (2011)Fright Night (2011) 6.4/10 on IMDbReleased 26 Jul 2011Colin Farrell makes the vampire next door's friendliness feel like a predator checking how easily a boundary moves. That performance and the half-empty Las Vegas development give the 2011 film a menace distinct from the 1985 original's affectionate horror-show atmosphere. Anton Yelchin's Charley…0
  10. 10A Star Is Born (2018)A Star Is Born (2018) 7.6/10 on IMDbReleased 3 Oct 2018Against the 1976 Streisand-Kristofferson version, the 2018 film's live-performance scenes give discovery a more convincing physical charge. Gaga's concentration before she sings and Cooper's rough, watchful stillness make attraction feel bound up with the risk of being heard. Earlier versions have…0
