The Iron Giant (1999)

Threat and the apparent loss near the end can hit hard for sensitive viewers. Brad Bird gives a boy's friendship with a giant robot an unusually strong moral question: what are you obliged to become? Humour and physical scale make the relationship convincing before the military pursuit intensifies.
