Marge Gunderson's practical decency anchors a crime story full of people making increasingly dreadful decisions. The snowy spaces and painfully ordinary exchanges make the violence more startling. See it for an unusually effective balance of black comedy, suspense and a moral centre that never needs to make a grand speech.
