A futuristic tower rises over a Dakar suburb while the people building it struggle to be paid. Mati Diop makes the gap between visible development and viable lives the source of the film's haunting. Ada's neighbourhood, the coastline and the rooms women occupy remain active parts of the argument. The supernatural movement deepens a story of labour and migration, rather than turning the city into an exotic mystery.
