Happy Valley (2014)

Catherine Cawood is experienced, funny, furious and carrying responsibilities that never stop when her police shift ends. Sarah Lancashire makes authority feel hard-earned rather than effortless. This is the bleakest end of the selection, with sexual violence and bereavement central to its world, but its middle-aged lead has a density of life few thrillers allow.
