Vera (2011)

Brenda Blethyn's north-east detective cuts through evasions with a mixture of awkwardness and fierce attention. Each feature-length investigation explores the pressures around a victim rather than simply displaying a clever mechanism. This is the more melancholy choice when you want one substantial case with a recognisable social world.
