Bicycle Thieves (1948)

A stolen bicycle matters because a livelihood and a child's view of his father travel with it. De Sica finds an enormous social world in streets, queues and fleeting encounters without losing the urgency of a search. The emotional power comes from that connection between material need and personal dignity.
