Seven Samurai (1954)

Kurosawa makes assembling a group as compelling as the battle it prepares for. Differences in temperament, work and class remain visible when action begins, so geography and character give each movement meaning. Its length earns an unusually complete community, and its excitement never erases the unequal terms on which that community depends.
