Two magicians revive English magic and discover that bargains, pride and apparently narrow exceptions have lives of their own. The period setting makes scholarship and professional rivalry part of the pleasure. This is less a combat system than a warning about taking a supernatural contract at face value, told with an increasingly uncanny atmosphere.
