Maggie and Eddie's old intimacy comes under pressure from bipolar disorder, financial strain and the limits of being permanently available. Nicola Coughlan and Lydia West make the jokes feel like part of the bond, not a pause in the drama. The later story's concern with repairing a falling-out makes it particularly apt for friendships that cannot simply resume unchanged.
