Six Feet Under (2001)

A family funeral business provides repeated contact with death while the Fishers remain spectacularly inconsistent about living. Several middle stretches are uneven, but years with their habits and failed reinventions give later moments unusual intimacy. The final movement earns much of its force from that long acquaintance. This is an emotionally demanding commitment with a strong destination.
