Barton Fink (1991)

The Coens turn a writer's room into a pressure chamber, with sound and decaying surfaces doing as much work as the dialogue. John Turturro's conviction becomes increasingly uncomfortable to watch. The film's comic cruelty is directed at the gap between claiming to understand people and actually listening.
