The shop workers cannot all choose their circumstances, which makes their shifting alliances more interesting than instant friendship. A policy or customer problem lets somebody unexpected become useful. The group includes real friction and unequal stakes, but the repeated experience of getting through a shift together supplies a strong sense of company.
