Albrun's isolation in the Alps is made tangible through milking, smoke, bodily sounds and the labour of staying alive. Community suspicion and misogyny crowd the frame even when she is alone. Lukas Feigelfeld leaves the boundary between witchcraft and psychological collapse unstable. Exceptionally slow and bleak, with sexual violence and distressing infant-related material, this suits viewers willing to inhabit an ordeal rather than follow a brisk plot.
