Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)

Vampires range from disposable threats to people whose surviving feelings make their existence morally complicated. The series uses those differences to test what responsibility a soul or a history creates. Its high-school opening can look modest beside later mythology, but the relationships make the changing rules worth following.
