A robot child programmed to love asks what responsibility adults owe a being they have made dependent on them. Haley Joel Osment's unwavering need for his mother can feel tender and frightening in the same scene. Spielberg's fairy-tale imagery makes the longing accessible, but abandonment and exploitation give this a much harsher edge than its child protagonist might suggest.
