The hunted replicants' fear of dying steadily complicates the detective story's account of who deserves sympathy. Rain, crowded interiors and Rutger Hauer's shifts between menace and vulnerability make the question visceral. The Final Cut is a good starting version. Its coercive treatment of Rachael is troubling, and sits uneasily beside the film's appeal for empathy.
