A terminally ill father is offered a replacement who could spare his family the knowledge of his death. Mahershala Ali makes the premise an intimate argument about love, consent and the desire to remain indispensable. The measured pace lets conflicting motives coexist. This is a grief-heavy choice, particularly suited to viewers interested in who gets to decide what a family should be protected from.
