Breaking the Waves (1996)

Emily Watson gives religious conviction and emotional need an extraordinary physical presence. Lars von Trier's unstable camera makes certainty difficult to sustain. Its sexual violence and suffering demand a difficult viewing choice, with the film's moral framing open to serious disagreement.
