The Life of David Gale (2003)

Ending spoilers. Gale helped stage the apparent murder and allowed his own execution as part of a campaign against capital punishment. The film wants the sacrifice to expose a system capable of killing an innocent man, but the elaborate deception changes what its example proves. That tension could support a thorny argument; the final revelation instead pushes the journalist and audience towards shock before the moral reasoning has caught up.
