CODA (2021)
Movie
Released
Best Picture, 2022 ceremony.
Troy Kotsur, Marlee Matlin and Daniel Durant give the fishing-family scenes a comic ease that deserves the affection this film won. The audition story is less enticing a second time, with an encouraging teacher, a deadline and obstacles falling into familiar coming-of-age positions. Ruby's brother's wish for independence suggests a more interesting family negotiation than that tidy trajectory develops. I would revisit their everyday interactions before signing up for the full uplift again.
