Saint Omer (2022)

Alice Diop follows a novelist attending an infanticide trial, allowing testimony to disturb her expectations about motherhood and identification. The courtroom's sustained attention is central to the form. It earns a high place for refusing an easy separation between observing another woman and confronting oneself.
