Musicians and cooks work to sustain a cultural life while trying to pay their own bills after Katrina. Practising a craft does not remove the need for a venue, an audience or a functioning neighbourhood. Choose it for creative labour embedded in a community rather than one exceptional person's rise. The music has room to breathe, and the practical obstacles do too.
