House of Cards (1990)
TV Show
First aired
Francis Urquhart's address to the audience makes complicity part of the entertainment in the 1990 British House of Cards. Its compact parliamentary scheming is a deliberate classic exception here, with a theatrical villain using party dependence as a route to revenge. The later trilogy extends the same corrosive outlook; democratic problem-solving is not what this performance of political cleverness wants to celebrate.
