The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Movie
Released
The beach-and-jazz life of wealthy Americans in Italy becomes something Tom studies as closely as a language. Sunlit leisure matters because belonging to it looks effortless for everyone except him. Matt Damon lets anxiety show through the imitation, making envy and desire more painfully legible than in Purple Noon. Watch the versions as different readings of the same novel, not a quiz about fidelity: this one makes the cost of maintaining a beautiful performance feel suffocating.

About The Talented Mr. Ripley
Tom Ripley is a calculating young man who believes it's better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody. Opportunity knocks in the form of a wealthy U.S. shipbuilder who hires Tom to travel to Italy to bring back his playboy son, Dickie. Ripley worms his way into the idyllic lives of Dickie and his girlfriend, plunging into a daring scheme of duplicity, lies and murder.
