The Big Sleep (1946)

Marlowe moves through rooms where attraction and deception are difficult to separate. Hawks gives the encounters wit and momentum even when the plot becomes deliberately tangled. It is a strong choice for detective atmosphere and performance, rather than a first exercise in tidy clue accounting.
