The Singing Detective (1986)

A hospital patient, a detective fantasy and childhood memory interrupt one another, with old songs making the joins stranger still. Michael Gambon's performance keeps the 1986 six-parter emotionally abrasive rather than merely clever. Sexual material and cruelty are substantial. It is absorbing for the way a change of register can reveal a defence breaking down.
