Elephant (2003)

Gus Van Sant's drifting camera follows overlapping school routines until ordinary movement becomes unbearable. The film refuses the reassuring explanatory certainty of a conventional crime drama. A formally distinctive, deeply distressing fictional response to a school shooting, rather than a factual reconstruction or a complete explanation of such violence.
