Zatoichi (2003)

Takeshi Kitano gives the blind swordsman's arrival a mixture of dry comedy, sharp action and surprising rhythmic play. The stillness around violence makes each movement count. This Japanese version belongs here for turning a familiar popular figure into a coherent expression of its director's timing.
