Hannibal (2013)

Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy give the central relationship a disturbing intimacy, while the imagery turns crime into something close to an ornate nightmare. That aesthetic concentration is precisely where I lose contact with it. I find the elaborate presentation of mutilation distancing rather than absorbing. Viewers drawn to psychological horror as stylised ritual may find the design inseparable from its appeal.
