The Truman Show (1998) uses Carrey's buoyancy while allowing alarm to seep through it. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) goes further towards inwardness: Joel often seems reluctant to occupy the space that Carrey's earlier comic characters filled so aggressively. Seeing the two together makes the shift clearer than treating a serious role as a temporary absence of jokes.
