Punch-Drunk Love (2002) finds fear and loneliness beneath the eruptions familiar from Sandler's comedies. The Meyerowitz Stories (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019) develop very different kinds of frustration from that emotional volatility. He never simply stopped making broad comedies; this parallel body of work changes how the supposedly familiar outbursts can be read.
