Angela Lansbury

Lansbury's Eleanor Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate (1962) brings domestic familiarity and political authority into a chilling relationship. Her certainty leaves very little room for another person's independent will. See the original film before reading detailed accounts of the role; the performance works best when its full reach can emerge through the story.
