Martha Costello's defence work makes representing a client different from approving of them. Maxine Peake gives the argument conviction while chambers politics, resources and professional ambition keep interfering. The cases have satisfying courtroom energy, but the stronger attraction is watching a principled barrister decide which compromises she can actually live with.
