The French Connection (1971)

Bill Hickman's driving helps turn a pursuit beneath elevated railway tracks into a ferocious argument between car and city. The train gives Popeye Doyle a target he can see but cannot simply follow, while pillars, traffic and corners keep interrupting the route. William Friedkin's location footage has a rough immediacy very different from a purpose-built freeway. Choose the film for that abrasive pressure, and for a police story whose protagonist is hardly a reassuring guide.
