Cruise is attached to the outside of an actual aircraft for the opening take-off, secured by a concealed cable system. Close coordination between Wade Eastwood, Gregg Smrz and the camera crew makes his position readable instead of reducing him to a distant speck. The underwater sequence offers a useful contrast: real tank performance combines with constructed surfaces, digital surroundings and edits. Both scenes make Ethan's practical limitations the source of suspense.
