Promising Young Woman (2020)

Emerald Fennell uses candy colours, pop music and Carey Mulligan's unnervingly controlled performance to turn an apparent revenge fantasy into a test of everyday complicity. Its final manoeuvres are deliberately provocative. The boldness belongs in a survey of 2020 even if the plotting leaves you arguing with it afterwards.
