Tahar Rahim's breakthrough in A Prophet (2009) places French, Arabic and Corsican inside a prison's power structure. The Mauritanian (2021) makes English central to a very different story of imprisonment. Compare the watchfulness of his fictional Malik with Mohamedou Ould Slahi's attempts to make himself understood, while allowing for the later film's harrowing torture material.
