Nikki Blonsky's Tracy seems to pull the whole neighbourhood into motion. The songs make her appetite for dancing and belonging an energy the film can share, which gives this version the edge for a buoyant evening. Its route is John Waters's 1988 film through the Broadway musical, rather than a straight scene-for-scene remake. Waters's sharper, scruffier comedy remains appealing; the 2007 film wins through musical momentum and the ensemble's generous comic rhythm.
