Happy as Lazzaro (2018)

Alice Rohrwacher begins with a rural community whose working arrangements conceal exploitation, then lets the story make an extraordinary leap. Adriano Tardiolo's guileless Lazzaro remains the film's moral centre as the setting changes around him. Its fable-like logic offers a perspective on labour that strict realism could not quite reach.
