Aneurin Bevan
Person
Born
Bevan's work as health minister turned Britain's NHS proposal into a service that opened in July 1948. In England and Wales, hospitals came into public ownership while family doctors remained independent contractors. That negotiated structure matters as much as the founding principle: wider access did not require every practitioner to become a state employee. His role is best understood alongside existing local services, wartime planning and the staff who made the new system operate.
