The Lady Eve (1941)

Barbara Stanwyck gives a con artist such intelligence and energy that Henry Fonda's sheltered heir scarcely stands a chance. Preston Sturges turns deception and changing appearances into a battle over who gets to define the relationship. The pratfalls are superb, but Stanwyck's shifts between calculation and genuine hurt give them weight.
