The Apartment (1960)

Jack Lemmon's office worker hopes that lending his apartment to senior colleagues will help his career. Billy Wilder lets that bleak arrangement generate both sharp comedy and an affecting connection with Shirley MacLaine's lift operator. The film's suicide attempt and workplace exploitation make its tenderness unusually hard won.
