Sideways (2004)

Two friends' wine-country trip exposes the awkward distance between refined taste and actual emotional behaviour. Paul Giamatti makes connoisseurship both a pleasure and a defence, while Thomas Haden Church brings a very different kind of evasion. Alexander Payne's comedy is funny because disappointment remains recognisable beneath the pretence.
