Harry Dean Stanton

At 57, Stanton took the lead as Travis in Paris, Texas (1984), after decades of supporting work. His weathered, initially near-silent presence becomes the film's emotional centre. This is an older exception to the list's mainly later films and series, and a particularly strong example of a familiar character actor being given time to carry a whole story.
