J. K. Simmons

Simmons first played music teacher Terence Fletcher in the 2013 Whiplash short at 58, then expanded the role in the 2014 feature. Familiar from television and Spider-Man, he now dominated an intimate battle of wills. The controlled pauses and sudden attacks turn rehearsal into a struggle for power. It is a fierce watch, not an uplifting account of good teaching.
