Pedro Aguirre Cerda
Person
Born
Aguirre Cerda made the expansion of primary and technical education a priority of Chile's Popular Front government from 1938 to 1941. His programme connected schooling with the skills needed for industrial development and broader social participation. This was an effort to extend provision rather than a complete replacement of the education system. His early death also makes it important to distinguish the administration's programme from everything later governments delivered.
