Die Hard (1988)

A vulnerable cop, a recognisable office tower and dwindling options make an unusually satisfying action mechanism. John McClane's improvised moves remain funny because they hurt and sometimes fail. The best starting point here for someone who wants clear stakes, a memorable villain and tension that grows from a single location.
