The Matrix (1999)

The Wachowskis make an abstract doubt about reality into a wonderfully legible action language. Keanu Reeves's growing confidence lets the audience learn the world's rules alongside him, while martial arts and digital effects give those rules physical consequences. Its mixture of philosophical invitation and propulsive entertainment remains an accessible route into speculative cinema.
